The 5th WACBE World Congress

The WACBE 2011 is integrated with the 2011 Annual meeting of the Taiwanese Society of Biomedical Engineering (TSBME 2011). In celebration of Dr. Shu Chien’s 80th birthday and Dr. Savio LY Woo’s 70th birthday, the WACBE 2011 will also honor the lifetime achievements of Drs. Chien and Woo by symposia on mechanobiology and orthopaedic bioengineering, respectively.

Submissions to this year’s WACBE Congress were numerous and resulted in 340 poster and podium presentations. The scientific program consists of plenary lectures, keynote lectures, special symposia, five parallel podium sessions, and two poster sessions. As suggested by Dr. Savio LY Woo, the WACBE founding president, we invited Dr. Michael M-C Lai, a world-renowned leader in virus, to deliver the honorary Congress lecture. Dr. Lai promoted a new vision and era of bioengineering research. In addition, the rapid growth of biomedical engineering programs in Asian countries has inspired a special forum on Bioengineering Education and Research – Emerging Trends and Future Prospects, organized by Dr. Kai-Nan An, Mayo Clinic.

In total, more than 1200 participants attended the combined meetings of WACBE 2011 and TSBME 2011. The Savio & Pattie Woo Travelling Fellowship, funded with the generous support of Professor and Mrs Savio LY Woo, and the Young Investigator’s Awards, courtesy of IEEE EMBS President Zhi-Pei Liang, had strongly encouraged participation from the young generations, as well as growth and involvement in bioengineering.
